gemma the child -the story of a little girl who died along with her parents in holocaust attacks on the jewish ghetto of lwów. laid out in seven panels by 23 year old polish artist jan talicz. gemma's parents were both tailor and haberdasher. they perished in a raid on the ghetto in the spring of 1943. gemma survived the violence, but her two sisters and four brothers were killed. gemma is eleven years old and is living with a catholic family. her father was a tailor and is now retired. her mother was a haberdasher. the picture, like many of the others in this set, are adapted from a series of lithographs published in the u.k. by the association of jewish artist (aja) in 2001, the work of edward herzbaum.[4] edward, like his mother, was the child of eastern european jews who had survived the holocaust and emigrated to britain. he worked with aja. the caption reads "lwów ghetto." artist jan talicz was active in the polish underground resistance movement during world war ii. talicz also collaborated with aja. the photo is a composite drawing including several images from an undated 1944 aja exhibition titled "in their own words." it is not known if the artist is in the picture. "gemma" is a jewish name with the same meaning in polish. the actual subject of the piece is unknown.
