Hara Full Movie Review
Hara is a 2011 Japanese drama film directed by Takashi Miike. It is a remake of the 1962 film Harakiri, directed by Masaki Kobayashi. The film stars Koji Yakusho, Munetaka Aoki, Naoto Takenaka, and Hikari Mitsushima. The film premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
The film is set in 17th century Japan, during the Edo period. It follows the story of Hanshiro Tsugumo, a ronin (masterless samurai) who arrives at the mansion of Lord Kageyu Saito, requesting to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) on his property. Saito, who has witnessed many such requests from desperate ronin, suspects that Tsugumo is bluffing and hopes to receive some money or mercy. He tells Tsugumo the story of Motome Chijiiwa, another ronin who came with the same request, but was forced to kill himself with a bamboo blade after his swords were revealed to be fake. Saito hopes that this story will deter Tsugumo from his plan, but Tsugumo remains adamant. He reveals that he has a personal connection to Motome, and proceeds to tell his own story, which involves his daughter Miho, his son-in-law Motome, and his adopted son-in-law Hikokuro Omodaka. As Tsugumo narrates his tragic tale, he also challenges Saito's retainers to a duel, exposing the corruption and hypocrisy of the samurai code.

The film is a powerful and poignant critique of the feudal system and the samurai honor. It shows how the rigid and oppressive social order drives people to poverty, despair, and death. It also questions the meaning and value of loyalty, duty, and sacrifice in a cruel and unjust world. The film is not only a faithful adaptation of the original film, but also a creative reinterpretation that adds new elements and perspectives. The film uses color, music, and cinematography to create a contrast between the past and the present, the beauty and the horror, and the life and the death. The film also features some of Miike's signature violence and gore, but in a restrained and effective way that serves the story and the theme.
Hara is a masterpiece of Japanese cinema that deserves to be seen by anyone who appreciates drama, history, and culture. It is a film that will make you think, feel, and reflect on the human condition. You can watch the official title teaser [here], or read more about the film on [IMDb].
